Creating time, space and grace for connection for Women of Black Heritage in the Arts, Culture, Creativity and Heritage sectors

Our first WANAWAKE gathering offers time to pause, meet one another and enjoy Tai Chi, High Tea and Creative Conversations in beautiful surroundings.

This is an invitation to join us at Compton Verney for the launch of WANAWAKE, funded by Arts Council England and delivered by Weusi, this is a new programme bringing together Women of Black Heritage across the Midlands and UK, through connection, creativity and collaboration.

Whether you’re an artist, creative, consultant, coder, broadcaster, producer, maker, performer, writer, curator, cultural organiser or working behind the scenes, we’d love you to join us.

Come with friends or come on your own... and hold space to make new connections. And if you have children, please come with them too.

BALLOT: If we sell out quickly, we have a waiting list on EventBrite too. Please make sure you add your name and we have a small allocation of additional spaces, which will be allocated via a ballot.

What to expect:

  • Tai Chi: time to move, breathe and settle into the day.

  • High Tea: an opportunity to enjoy food and conversation together.

  • Creative Conversations: space to share experiences, ideas and possibilities.

  • Time to connect with other Women of Black Heritage working across our sectors.

  • An introduction to WANAWAKE and the programme ahead.

WANAWAKE creates intentional spaces where we can connect, reflect, share and grow together. Beginning in Coventry and Birmingham, the programme will bring women together through in-person gatherings and an online community, building relationships that can continue beyond each event.

This launch is an invitation to help shape that community from the beginning.

  • As a Black Woman, I am deeply uninterested in spending the 2nd half of my life proving how much I can endure. I would like to explore how much joy I can hold.

  • If you don't see yourself, you feel like you don't matter.

  • We teach girls shame. 'Close your legs. Cover yourself.' We make them feel as though being born female they're already guilty of something.

  • If we all know better, then why don't we do better? Be better?
